Why is there a hold on my account?
A hold is typically placed on a deposit to protect the customer from a loss should the check be returned for any reason. The delay is usually needed to learn of any payment problems. It's important to remember that a check can be returned for nonpayment after the hold expires and the funds are released. As the depositor, you may be responsible for any funds you spend from depositing a returned check.
